Product security engineering

Security designed into your product, with the work products auditors and customers expect.

Security that is designed in costs less than security that is added later.

Product security engineering builds protection into a product while it is designed and developed, and produces the evidence that regulators, assessors and customers ask for: the threat analysis and risk assessment (TARA), the security concept, the requirements, the test results and a secure development lifecycle.

We work inside your engineering team, from the first architecture sketch to series release. We cover the full stack, from hardware roots of trust and cryptography to software, interfaces and the backend, so the measures fit your product and your cost targets.

Who it is for

  • Vehicle manufacturers and suppliers
  • Makers of machines, industrial components and energy equipment
  • Medical device manufacturers
  • Engineering teams that must deliver ISO/SAE 21434 or IEC 62443 work products

What modern products have to withstand

The attack surface of a connected product has grown well beyond its firmware. These are the areas we design against.

Interfaces

Remote and local access

Wireless, cloud, diagnostic and service interfaces are the first targets. Each needs authentication and a clear trust boundary.

Updates

Software updates

Over-the-air and field updates must be signed, verified and recoverable, or they become the easiest way in.

Hardware

Physical attacks

Debug ports, memory extraction and fault injection matter as soon as an attacker can hold the device.

Keys

Cryptography and key management

Weak key storage or shared keys across a fleet turn one compromised device into many.

Supply chain

Third-party components

Open source and supplier software bring known vulnerabilities. Without an SBOM, nobody can tell which products are affected.

Variants

Product variants

Every variant changes the attack surface. Analyses that are not reusable multiply effort and errors.

Lifecycle

Years in the field

Products stay in use for ten years and more. Security has to be maintained long after the project team has moved on.

Evidence

Audit-ready proof

Assessors and type approval authorities expect consistent, traceable work products, not slides.

Our engineering principles

Security has to fit the product, the cost target and the release plan. These principles make that possible.

1

Risk-based

Every measure traces back to a rated risk, so effort goes where it matters.

2

Defence in depth

Several independent layers, from hardware to backend, so one failure does not open the product.

3

Hardware trust anchor

Secure boot, secure storage and unique keys start in silicon.

4

Reuse across variants

Base analyses are reused; only differences are assessed.

5

Traceability

Risks, requirements, design and tests stay linked from concept to release.

6

Built for maintenance

Update, monitoring and vulnerability handling are designed in, not bolted on.

How we help

From concept to series release. Start with one service or let us carry the full security engineering scope.

Threat analysis and risk assessment (TARA)

What can go wrong, and how bad it would be.

What we do

  • Define the system, assets and interfaces
  • Damage scenarios, threats and attack paths
  • Rate impact and feasibility, decide risk treatment

You receive

TARA report, risk treatment decisions, security goals

Security concept and architecture

How the product is protected.

What we do

  • Derive security requirements from the risks
  • Design secure boot, update, authentication, logging and backend security
  • Allocate requirements to components and suppliers

You receive

Security concept, architecture, traceable requirements

Hardware security and cryptography

Trust that starts in the chip.

What we do

  • Select and configure HSM, secure element or TPM
  • Key management and PKI concepts for production and field
  • Review of cryptographic design and implementation

You receive

Hardware security concept, key management design, review report

Secure development lifecycle

A process that keeps products secure release after release.

What we do

  • Roles, reviews, secure coding and security testing
  • SBOM and third-party component management
  • Preparation for IEC 62443-4-1 or ISO/SAE 21434 assessment

You receive

Process set, templates, gap list against the standard

Component security levels (IEC 62443-4-2)

Proof that a component meets its target security level.

What we do

  • Map component requirements to your design
  • Close gaps in authentication, integrity and logging
  • Prepare evidence for certification

You receive

Requirement compliance matrix, gap closure plan

Supplier and customer interfaces

Clear responsibilities along the supply chain.

What we do

  • Cybersecurity interface agreements
  • Supplier security requirements
  • Review of supplier work products

You receive

Interface agreements, review reports

How we work

Step 1

Understand

Architecture, use cases and existing documents.

Step 2

Analyse

Threat analysis and risk assessment with your engineers.

Step 3

Design

Security concept, requirements and process.

Step 4

Verify

Reviews, tests and hand-over to your team.

Standards and regulations

ISO/SAE 21434

Cybersecurity engineering for road vehicles and their components.

UN R155 and R156

Cybersecurity and software update management for vehicle type approval.

IEC 62443-4-1

Secure development lifecycle for industrial products, with maturity levels.

IEC 62443-4-2

Technical security requirements for components, by security level.

CRA Annex I

Essential cybersecurity requirements for products with digital elements.

IEC 81001-5-1 and FDA premarket guidance

Security lifecycle and submission content for medical device software.

Industries

Vehicles, machines, controllers, medical devices and energy equipment: the method is the same, the threats and rules differ.

Why Nord CS

Our team holds IEC 62443 Expert, TISAX and NIS2 implementer qualifications, and our founder serves on the ENISA Advisory Board. Our background spans full-vehicle TARAs, hardware security and applied cryptography. AITIGRITY carries analyses from concept to test and reuses them across variants.

Questions we often hear

Do you only advise, or also do the work?

Both. We carry out the analyses and design work with your team, and train your engineers on the way.

Can we reuse a TARA for product variants?

Yes. The base analysis is reused and only the differences are assessed, which saves most of the effort for each new variant.

Can you support hardware decisions?

Yes. We help select and configure secure elements, HSMs and TPMs, and design key management for production and the field.

Which tools do you use?

We work in AITIGRITY, or in the tools your team already uses.

Where does your product stand?

Tell us about your product and the rule you are facing. You talk to an engineer from the first call.
